One of the most outstanding of musicians and performers from the Japanese traditional music scene, AUN has been amazingly up to the new level that no other artists have ever reached to.
With more than one thousand years of history in Japanese traditional music, and the beautiful and unique sounds of those instruments, has now spawned a very original fusion of today’s music, mixed with the tradition of old.
The result is AUN, Twin brothers Ryohei and Kohei Inoue, born in 1969, a versatile band where each member is a virtuoso in his own right, performs Taikos, Samisen and Fue (Japanese flute) appearing 4 times at CARNEGIE HALL, NY and has received EMMY AWARDS as a leading member of ONDEKOZA, a legendary Japanese taiko drum troupe with over 30 years experience of world touring. Ryohei and Kohei joined when they were 18 and performed more than 1000 shows in 16 countries during 12 years with that group.
In 2000, they launched their exploration of the highly individual style of music as a unit named AUN and have released two albums; “DASH” and “EAST” featuring TM Stevens as a bassist and producer, Nuno Bettencourt as a guitarist. AUN, in 2006 produced “Visit Japan” campaign song offered by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and took a real step to send their message overseas with Japanese traditional instruments sound.
In 2008, their experimentalism has yielded the brand new concept called AUN J-Classic Orchestra, of which music performed by purely Japanese traditional instruments such as Koto and Shakuhachi as well as Taiko, Samisen and Fue. The orchestra has released 3 albums called “Wagakki de Ghibli,” “Sakura,” and “Michi-Road”. Their performance is not only amazing in their execution of the musical compositions, it is also very exciting and entertaining as they encompass today’s Rock & Roll, Ambient, and Bass & Drum styles that are very popular with young and old. On the other side of the group’s activity, they are taking part in the ecoactivity project to regenerate forest and mountains in Japan and a portion of the revenues from their CD sales is donated to the project.
HIDE (Hideyuki Saito) joined the Taiko group “Kodo” in 1987. During his stay in Kodo with the band, he performed in over 150 cities around the world, and collaborated with various musicians and artists e.g. Sir Paul McCartney, Donal Lunny Band, Terumasa Hino, Seitaro Kuroda, Tamasaburo Bando, Kiyohiko Senba, and Hitoshi Komuro. Hide has also performed on the soundtracks of many Hollywood movies such as “HERO”, and attended the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo in 2001. More than 10,000 people enjoyed a fabulous performance during Kodo’s two-day concert at The Acropolis in Athens. Hide also joined on the theme song for the 2002 FIFA World Cup held in Japan/South Korea.
