The Japanese contemporary dance-theatre company, Pappa Tarahumara, re-interprets Antoon Chekov’s literary classic set in rural Japan during the 1960s. It’s seemingly sweet portrayal of three bored sisters grappling with womanhood spirals into a sensual and charged meditation on female identity, coming-of-age and the Japanese obsessin with youth culture. This eccentric comic tragedy, narrated through dynamic choreography, is a powerfully condensed alternative to the company’s larger scale multi-disciplinary works.

In 1982, the performing arts company Pappa Tarahumara was formed by Hiroshi Koike, its Artistic Director. Since then, Pappa has been enriching its stages with inter-disciplinary originality and creative energy, leaving an indelible impression on audience’s visual and auditory senses. Koike has his own clear statement of the three main elements of performance art: 1. Space, 2. Time, 3. Body.

This performance is supported by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
